susan pui san lok: new works online
We are excited to present three stunning new films by susan pui san lok from her RoCH Fans & Legends project: Covers I and II, and Trailers.
RoCH Fans & Legends draws on fan uploads of over forty different media adaptations of The Condor Trilogy by Jin Yong, a classic ‘new wuxia’ epic first published in the 1950s. RoCH stands for Return of the Condor Heroes, the second book in the trilogy; wuxia is a martial arts swordplay genre of Chinese fiction, television and cinema, usually featuring the adventures of male and female ‘knight errants’. RoCH Fans & Legends explores some of the genre’s fantasies, landscapes, and archetypes, the trilogy’s numerous translations across popular culture, and recurring images of weightlessness.
You can read our interview with susan about the project here.
The RoCH project includes gallery installations and an artist’s book and is commissioned by Derby QUAD and the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CfCCA), in partnership with Animate Projects and the University of Salford. The RoCH Fans & Legends exhibition is at QUAD in Derby until 15 November and opens at CfCCA in June 2016.
Commissioned by QUAD and CFCCA (Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art) in partnership with Animate Projects and University of Salford. Supported using public funding from the National Lottery by Arts Council England.
