We are delighted to announce that the new e-publication Deviant Practice. Research Programme 2016-17 is now available to download from the Van Abbemuseum website.

The e-pub is the outcome of the first series of research grants carried out by invited artists, curators, archivists and educators. The nine research papers, which include extensive archival material, colour illustrations and videos, present projects drawing on the museum’s collections, history and constituency groups. Responding to the programme’s ambition of offering original research that challenges the Van Abbe’s modernist trajectory, the research projects span the economic connections between the Van Abbe’s founding and the tobacco fields of Indonesia to speculative experiments in recreating art works in public space. Through a series of fascinating detours, the projects shed light on the multiple blind spots of the museum concerning its history and ways of working, whilst exploring the specific potential of research within the context of an art museum.

Met groot genoegen maken we bekend dat de nieuwe e-publicatie Deviant Practice. Onderzoeksprogramma 2016-17vanaf vandaag online staat. Hij kan gedownload worden op de website van het Van Abbemuseum.

De e-publicatie toont de resultaten van de eerste reeks onderzoekssubsidies die in de periode 2016-17 werden uitgevoerd door kunstenaars, curatoren, archivarissen en bemiddelaars. De negen papers, die uitgebreid archiefmateriaal, illustraties in kleur en video’s bevatten, presenteren projecten die schatplichtig zijn aan de collecties van het museum, haar geschiedenis en onze ‘constituencies’ (partners uit de samenleving). Als gevolg van de ambitie van het programma om kritisch onderzoek te honoreren dat het modernistische traject van Van Abbe tart, bespannen de onderwerpen de economische banden tussen het Van Abbemuseum, haar stichter en tabakshandelaar Van Abbe en tabakproducerend land Indonesië, tot speculatieve experimenten met kunstwerken in de openbare ruimte. Via fascinerende wegen belichten de studies de meervoudige blinde vlekken van het museum met betrekking tot haar geschiedenis en haar museale werkwijze en het potentieel aan onderzoeksthema’s dat zich aandient in de context van een kunstmuseum.
